Built in 1666 and destroyed in 1944 by the Nazis, the Pałac Saski (Saxon Palace) was the residence of the Morsztyn family, royal dynasties, and even Chopin. The visible remains of the Palace are now the tomb of the unknown soldier.
Starting from the 1990s, the topic returns from time to time, and the head of the PIS, Jarosław Kaczyński is a fervent supporter of the reconstruction project. For several years, he repeatedly raised the subject. Once built, it will be opened to associations and the citizens of Warsaw.
The project submitted to the Sejm by the government (PIS) caused controversy, mainly for its cost, which may exceed two billion PLN. Such a budget can shock in the context of high inflation and instability, but the construction is starting. The first phase of reconstruction will begin tomorrow (August 18th), a 680 meters fence will be built, before, in a dozen of days, the beginning of a long archaeological process, with the excavation of the Palace’s foundations and adjacent buildings, now visible. The second phase, the reconstruction, will start at the beginning of next year.
